Pool Safety For Your Kids & Pets

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it’s also important to be safe around pools. Here are some tips for pool safety with kids and dogs:

For Kids

  • Always supervise children when they are in or around the pool. Never leave them unattended, even for a moment.
  • Teach children how to swim and how to float. Make sure they know how to get out of the pool if they fall in.
  • Never allow children to dive into the shallow end of the pool. The shallow end is not deep enough for diving and can cause serious injuries.
  • Make sure children wear a life jacket when they are in or around the pool. Life jackets should be worn at all times, even if the child is a strong swimmer.
  • Keep toys and other objects out of the pool. Toys and other objects can create a tripping hazard and can also be a choking hazard for children.
  • Check the pool water temperature before allowing children to swim. The water temperature should be between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Have a first-aid kit on hand in case of an accident.

For Dogs

  • Not all dogs are good swimmers. If you are not sure if your dog can swim, do not allow it in the pool.
  • If your dog is allowed in the pool, supervise it closely. Dogs can become overheated quickly and can drown if they are not supervised.
  • Make sure your dog has a way to get out of the pool if it gets tired. You can install a ramp or ladder in the pool for your dog to use.
  • Do not allow your dog to drink pool water. Pool water can contain chemicals that can be harmful to dogs.
  • Clean your dog after it has been in the pool. Pool water can dry out your dog’s skin and coat.

By following these tips, you can help keep your kids and dogs safe around pools this summer.

Here are some additional tips for pool safety:

  • Install a fence around your pool. A fence will help to keep children and pets out of the pool when you are not around.
  • Keep the pool cover closed when you are not using the pool. This will help to keep children and pets from falling in.
  • Test the pool water regularly and add chemicals as needed. Improperly maintained pool water can be a breeding ground for bacteria and algae.
  • Vacuum and brush your pool regularly. This will help to remove dirt and debris that can harbor bacteria and algae.
  • Backwash your filter regularly. This will help to remove dirt and debris that can clog the filter and reduce the effectiveness of the chemicals.
  • Drain and refill your pool every few years. This will help to remove any built-up bacteria and algae.

By following these tips, you can help keep your pool safe and clean for everyone to enjoy.
